GOODeNEWS

FOR February 5, 2012

 One month down in 2012.  Time continues to fly by!  We hope this edition of the GOODeNEWS finds you happy, healthy and (since the hometown Eagles aren’t in it) relaxed prior to the Super Bowl.

Speaking of which – the Sunday School is collecting cans of soup for our annual “Soup”er Bowl Sunday.  The students would appreciate you bringing a can or two to Sunday School or worship tomorrow morning.  Donations will go to our Food Pantry to help our neighbors in need.  We’re looking to stack the cans along the front railing in the sanctuary to show how powerful God’s love is in our congregation.  So, please consider bringing soup for the cause!

Next Sunday, February 12th, we will have another delicious Fellowship Breakfast.  Sunday School will not meet so that the students can come with their families at 10am for breakfast.  No RSVP needed – we’ll just plan to see you there and will be sure to have plenty of good eats for all!

Happy February!!

Concluding Thoughts

This week – another favorite hymn – and an interesting conversation.  The hymn is, “St. Patrick’s Breastplate,” and can be heard using the link below:

http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/s/t/stpatric.htm

The conversation was regarding who chose this particular hymn as their favorite.  It is Rev. Purchase’s favorite.  As he relayed his affinity for the hymn, he also mentioned that he was having difficulty finding the words to it in any of the hymnals he has and that perhaps a pastor shouldn’t have a favorite.  Hmmm….should a pastor have a favorite?  Your editor thinks – why not?  As reported earlier (when we first started asking for your favorites) music can have strong sway over us – and there is a multitude of music out there.  So, it seems perfectly fine for the pastor to have one close to his heart as well.  And while this one was not familiar to your editor, it was a wonderful find.  Thanks, Pastor Tom!

So…..do YOU have a favorite?  And, if not – is there any special music that makes you feel closer to Jesus?  Send them along – perhaps your favorite will strike a chord (!) with someone else.

May God continue to bless you all during the coming week!

St. Patrick’s Breastplate
I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same
The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this today to me forever
By power of faith, Christ’s incarnation;
His baptism in Jordan river,
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spicèd tomb,
His riding up the heavenly way,
His coming at the day of doom
I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power
Of the great love of cherubim;
The sweet ‘Well done’ in judgment hour,
The service of the seraphim,
Confessors’ faith, Apostles’ word,
The Patriarchs’ prayers, the prophets’ scrolls,
All good deeds done unto the Lord
And purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the star lit heaven,
The glorious sun’s life giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea
Around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need.
The wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward;
The word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.

Against the demon snares of sin,
The vice that gives temptation force,
The natural lusts that war within,
The hostile men that mar my course;
Or few or many, far or nigh,
In every place and in all hours,
Against their fierce hostility
I bind to me these holy powers.

Against all Satan’s spells and wiles,
Against false words of heresy,
Against the knowledge that defiles,
Against the heart’s idolatry,
Against the wizard’s evil craft,
Against the death wound and the burning,
The choking wave, the poisoned shaft,
Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.
By Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.
